It is situated in the Flores Department [4] of Uruguay, in the south of the country. The boundaries of San José Department, Colonia Department and Soriano Department meet those of Flores Department at a point near the town.
The Grande River (Uruguay) (Spanish: Arroyo Grande) runs near the town.
Ismael Cortinas is the second largest town in the Flores Department, which, it may be noted, is the most sparsely populated Department in Uruguay.
It was founded in 1950, named after Ismael Cortinas (Uruguayan politician). Cortinas was a Deputy, Senator, journalist and playwright.
